We have aimed to bring top quality international clinicians, educators and researchers from within the subspecialty of Obstetric Anaesthesia to South Africa for an exciting International Obstetric Anaesthesia Congress. Coupled with excellent local input, we aim to address the theme: “High- and low-income countries – what can we learn from one another?”
• We intend promoting the importance of the Sub-specialty of Obstetric Anaesthesia in low-income countries, particularly in Africa, where it has such an important influence on Maternal and Child Health.
• A key objective of the Congress will be the creation of an Obstetric Anaesthesia Fellowship in South Africa. We will learn about the top-quality research and clinical practice which is being performed around the world, and clearly understand the “how”, “what” and “why” of our sub-speciality.
• A key target will be the generation of firm recommendations that can be used in the context of low- and middle-income countries, to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. For example, we will assemble a Consensus View on Post-caesarean Analgesia in low-income countries. Also included will be a research pathway, which will occur with the support of SAPORG (South African Perioperative Research Group).
This interdisciplinary congress, endorsed by OASIS (South African Obstetric Anaesthesia Special Interest Society), is aimed not only at a South African audience, but we have also invited delegates from African countries and high-income countries. The programme has a wide range of topics, many of which are major controversies in the field, and will be of interest to trainees (medical officers and registrars) and Anaesthesiologists (including those with a special interest in the peripartum/perioperative period), Obstetricians, Nurses, Neonatologists and Physicians alike.
Themes will be addressed in the format of short lectures, debates, panel discussions, case reports, and poster presentations. A “meet the experts” coach trip to the Winelands will take place on Wednesday, November 20th, followed by a day of workshops on Thursday, November 21st, and the Congress on November 22nd- 24th. We encourage you all to share ideas in what should be a memorable think-tank with lasting educational and practical benefits.

The WFSA improves patient care around the world. It seeks to ensure universal access to safe anaesthesia and unites hundreds of thousands of anaesthesiologists behind this goal.
Last year world leaders in the field of anaesthesiology gave us over $2m worth of their time and know how.
You can be part of that extraordinary effort.
