Applications now open: WFSA-Ohio State University Research Fellowships 2019

The WFSA Scientific Affairs Committee & the Department of Anesthesiology, Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Centre are partnering to provide two research fellowships. These unique positions based at the Department of Anesthesiology, The Ohio State University, and are open to anaesthesiologists from low and middle income countries (according to World Bank criteria). The aim of the fellowship program is to foster the development of research in countries with limited resources. The fellow will work on a research project for a period of 12 months, with the final goal of publishing an original paper in an indexed journal, and to present the results to American Society of Anesthesiology meeting that will be held in Orlando (Oct. 19-23 2019). The project could form part of an advanced diploma, or a PhD thesis.

The selected fellows will spend 12 months in the OSU research program working on a specific research project under the supervision and guidance offered by the faculty members from the Department of Anesthesiology and the WFSA Scientific Affairs committee. The anticipated start date of the fellowship is January 2, 2019.

The Ohio State University –Wexner Medical Center ’s research program is one of the largest clinical anaesthesia research programs in the world, dedicated to enhancing research skills and training anaesthesiologists in the conduct of research. Research fellows are mentored by the OSU Clinical and Neuroanesthesia Research Group, founded by the Department of Anaesthesiology, Wexner Medical Center in 2007. The group provides research support for multiple surgical and non-surgical Wexner Medical Center departments covering orthopedic, trauma, ICU, general surgery, transplant, internal medicine and basic science studies. Applicants are required to provide an outline of a research project that they would like to do in their own country. Please note that, in most cases, the selected fellows will be attached to an existing OSU study during the fellowship, but there will be opportunities for development ongoing mentorship of the applicant’s own research project.

Criteria for applicants:

• Working in low and middle-income countries (World Bank classification).
• IELTS score of 7 and above in all categories.
• Preference will be given to applicants less than 40 years old.

• An outline of the aims and methods of your proposed research project (1-2 pages, less than 500 words)
• Curriculum vitae with one recent photo and the names of two referees
• Letter of recommendation from your national anaesthesiology society
• Letter of recommendation from your current workplace (hospital/institution)
• Scanned copy of your medical degree
• Scanned copy of your specialist qualification
• Scanned copy of passport

In the online application, you will need to list 3 current OSU Anesthesiology research studies that most interest you.

A selection panel comprising members of the WFSA Scientific Affairs Committee and the Department of Anesthesiology, OSU, will assess all applications. Shortlisted applicants may be required to participate in a video interview. The deadline for applications is the 15th March and successful applicants will be notified before the end of April 2018.
