Medical Training Initiative

The WFSA and the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) have partnered to offer qualified anaesthetists/intensivists from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Malawi and Nepal, who are in good standing with their National Society, the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in the UK through the RCoA’s Medical Training Initiative (MTI) scheme.

The MTI scheme provides a route for high quality International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to undertake a training placement in a UK hospital for a maximum period of 24 months. Please note that the MTI scheme is philanthropic in nature and not a route suitable for doctors who intend to remain in the UK for longer than 24 months.

Anaesthetists who undertake training via the MTI route will benefit from excellent clinical training, and gain non-clinical skills such as medical education and leadership. These skills will be of significant benefit, not only to doctors themselves, but also to healthcare systems and patients in their home countries.

MTI sponsorship will equip International Medical Graduates with:

• GMC registration (please note that offers of sponsorship as a route to GMC registration are based upon the GMC's decision and approval and are only valid once this has been granted)
• Facilitating Tier 5 visa application
• Eligibility to sit the Fellow of the Royal College Anaesthetists (FRCA) examinations

The RCoA quality approves and assures the posts offered in the UK. The WFSA member National Society will ensure that it only puts forward candidates who will benefit from training in the UK and whose skills and knowledge will benefit their home country upon their return. The WFSA member National Societies will maintain contact with MTI Dr’s throughout their placement and together with the WFSA & RCoA will help to ensure candidates return to their home country.

The MTI scheme accepts applications on a rolling basis and therefore there is no submission deadline. For more information, please use the links on the RCoA website here.

If you meet the eligibility criteria and wish to apply, please submit your CV, English tests results and a letter from your National Society to
