• A SDRA é uma síndrome de insuficiência respiratória hipoxêmica associada a edema pulmonar não-cardiogênico que ocorre em 10% dos pacientes de UTI. Ischaemic stroke is a life threatening and disabling condition. The treatment options have previously included antiplatelet agents, modification of risk factors, thrombolysis and rehabilitation. Mechanical thrombectomy is now considered a gold standard treatment. Its indications are widening with implications for healthcare management and for anaesthetists providing care for these patients.

La encefalitis infecciosa es una emergencia médica donde el diagnóstico y tratamiento tempranos mejoran dramáticamente la tasa de supervivencia sin discapacidad neurológica. Se necesita un bajo índice de sospecha. Aciclovir intravenoso debe ser administrado en forma empírica dentro de las 6 horas subsiguientes a la sospecha diagnóstica, ya que es efectivo contra los patógenos causantes más frecuentes: virus herpes simplex y virus varicella zoster. Los pacientes pueden ser referidos a cuidado crítico para manejo subsiguiente si necesitan soporte orgánico o fisiológico como resultado de la disfunción orgánica producto de este proceso infeccioso. El cuidado crítico también tiene un rol previniendo o limitando la injuria cerebral secundaria que puede surgir de esta infección neurológica.

Infective encephalitis is the acute, usually viral, infective inflammation of the brain parenchyma. A few patients will develop a severe manifestation and may deteriorate and require organ support. A low index of clinical suspicion and prompt antimicrobial treatment is crucial for the best chance of recovery without a disability. Management in the critical care setting focuses on treating the primary pathology whilst preventing secondary brain injury.

ARDS is a syndrome of hypoxaemic respiratory failure associated with non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema which occurs in 10% of ICU patients. ARDS is often associated with multiple organ dysfunction and carries a high mortality, morbidity and financial cost. Due to its prevalence in the critical care patient population, it is important for physicians to understand some principles of management that may help reduce the mortality and morbidity of the syndrome.
